When the band was still a three-piece - constisting of Greg Graffin, Jay Ziskrout and Brett Gurewitz - and didn't have a name yet, they wrote their first three songs: Sensory Overload, World War III, and Slaves.
"At first, we didn't care," Graffin laughs, "it actually sounded pretty good, it was very melodic, very loud guitar and drums, and I sang to it. Our first few songs (...) were first ironed out in that strange format, but we had to admit to ourselves that it probably would sounds better with some low end on it. That's when we rounded up Jay Bentley, mostly because he was one of three possible people."[1]
These were the songs that were on the tape that they gave to Jay Bentley in November or December 1979[2] when he was asked to play bass in the band.[3]
