In 1998 Bad Religion were making a video for the song Raise Your Voice and Jay decided for no particular reason to wear pyjamas. The next show they played he also wore the same pyjamas on stage and thought "I'm never taking these off." Also during the tour in Europe he continued to wear them at every show.
When the pyjamas started to smell bad Jay jumped into a river to give them a rinse, which kinda worked.
By the time the Warped Tour started, Jay was determined to play every show wearing the pyjamas and never wash them. Eventually they weren’t allowed on the bus anymore and had to ride in the engine bay. By the end of that year they were stiff and reeked badly. He didn’t think much of them when they “disappeared”, until a few years later when Kevin Lyman called and said the Warped Tour was going to have an exhibit in the Rock and Roll hall of fame and asked if Bad Religion would like to contribute something. Jay went down to their locker and was actually thinking about a pop-up tent when he found a tightly balled up trash bag behind a bunch of stuff. He opened it just enough to see the stripes, laughed out loud, put the bag in a box and sent it off to Cleveland.
