The BR Mailing List, founded by Len Smith. It was an email containing news and rumors about Bad Religion that was sent to whoever subscribed to the mailing list. Mailing lists preceded web forums and can provide similar functionalities. This means that people were also able to reply to the initial email, which would then also be distributed to the list's subscribers.
The first issue came out on January 15 1996. Len worked for Epitaph and put each issue together by hand until there were over 1500 subscribers. During this time, Joe Manis had been running an ISP, giving shell accounts and web-space to friends. He heard Len was in trouble -- not only did he lose his job at Epitaph in late 1997 (Andy Kaulkin sacked Len when he temporarily took over Epitaph from Brett while he was undergoing treatment for drug addiction), but also lost his opportunity to deliver The BRML through the mail server he had been using. Joe contacted Len in early 1998, offering to setup The BRML at his ISP. However, Len hesitated to accept the offer until summer 1998.
When Joe Manis eventually became the maintainer / moderator of the BRML it had less members but became much more civil, friendly and interesting. As of early 2000 it also came out daily once more.
It's unclear when the BRML ceased to exist, although it's probably sometime around 2000.
