According to Jay there must be less than 10 unreleased songs, most of them from 1980. Very early material, pretty rough. One of those songs is "Everything Turned Sour", that got shelved early on.[1]
Another one is a song that was played live at The Galaxy Theater in Fullerton, CA on October 31, 1982. Until this day the name of the song remains unknown, but is often referred to as "Greg's new song".
"Hellion" is the name of a song by Brett from 1982 intented for their second album, not knowing the direction Greg was going to go. Then he decided to write non-punk songs like Greg was doing and so this one was abandoned and was never recorded.
For Generator there was one song that was demoed by Greg Graffin, but was never recorded with the whole band. It's called "Inner Dream".
Greg Graffin wrote and demoed two songs for Recipe For Hate that were not picked up: "Hole In The Ship" and "Wasting Oxygen".
For Stranger Than Fiction three additional songs were demoed by Greg Graffin: "Fucked Up Children", "Fanatics" and "The Truth".
For a relatively short period of time "Strange Denial" was also an unreleased song. It was written and demoed in 1994/1995 by Greg Graffin and was intended for The Gray Race. After some changes were made to the chorus a few years later, it ended up on the No Substance album.
Greg wrote and recorded a demo for The New America (album) that wasn't recorded with the whole band called "California."
One of the songs from the New Maps Of Hell sessions that was never released is "New Chapter". Jay: "New Chapter will probably not see the light of day.. it was a good song, but it ran into insurmountable issues that we couldn't rectify. maybe we can give it a try next time again...".
Jay: "I'm sure Greg Graffin has plenty of songs he's never shown the band, but I am assuming you mean songs that we all played on. And in that sense, even the majority of the songs I mentioned before were never recorded at all. So I would venture to say that these songs would be not obtainable at all, except for a very rare and old (pre 1982) live bootleg. I have never seen one though."
A widespread rumor was that Bad Religion supposedly recorded 23 songs for The Gray Race but only 15 made it to the CD. Even if Universal Cynic and The Dodo (both released as B-sides on the Punk Rock Song single) were 2 of them, there would still be 6 left. This rumor has been denied by Jay on many occasions.
