Rescue me when I get too deep,
Talk to me, there's nothing to tell.
Everyone is a hypocrite,
Look to me, I'll save your soul.
Somebody out there must be reading my mail
'Cause everybody knows...
Follow me when you give up,
Work for me, it'll serve you well.
Everyone is a hypocrite,
Come to me, I'll save your soul.
Somebody out there must be tapping my phone
'Cause everybody knows:
I'm a man with a mission,
I'm gonna fly you away,
High above the noise and competition,
'Cause I'm a man with a mission.
Oh yeah.

Actually I think the "condemn you to fiery perdition" makes it impossible for this song to be about Jesus (unless Brett's understanding itself is flawed, which is not a knock to him but a possibility).
Let me explain: Jesus didn't really condemn anyone to fiery perdition in His earthly life. I think, then, that this song is about a hypocritical preacher (playing off of the irony of "everyone is a hypocrite" similar to how Come Join Us plays off of similar ironies in its own lyrics). In fact, I'll take it further: this song is (or should be, reading the line about condemnation) about a Pharisee!
Not just the Pharisees of yore either. Modern-day Pharisees like Kirk Cameron, Ray Comfort, Jack Chick, John MacArthur, Paul Washer, Tim Conway...all of these people who are saying that to be saved, a person has to give up their sins. To which I say: hogwash! But these are the people, preaching their false gospel, who are truly "condemning people to fiery perdition" by saying that, in order to be saved, you have to "commit to Christ"...otherwise, it's off to fiery perdition with ya! Well like I said, hogwash, though everyone is entitled to their opinions.

It sounds like it could be related to any cult/religious (no difference) leader. Actually, if you ask me, this song is very similar in meaning to Come Join Us and could be seen as a precursor to that.

It's about a mechanism in the world that creates leader who is followed by blind people, who adore Him (he could be Orwell's big brother, Stalin, Hitler, chief of the sect or whoever), but finally they are in trouble.

According to Brett it is about "cult leaders in general." Jesus being a prime cult leader, it makes much sense to assume that as the meaning, and it makes a lot of sense.
