Out in the cold like a bundle of coal
Little packets of darkness wanting to glow
Well, there's nobody home and there's a wreck in the yard
Well maybe they're coming back
If we wish really hard
If we wish real hard now
Won't somebody please come up with something
'Cause Jesus just don't seem to be impartially working
And all of the rest are really down in the ratings
So everyone is gonna keep on waiting
Waiting for peace at the end of the street
Back behind our apartment and in passenger seats
Just a moment of bliss amid all of the waste
The despair and oblivion of our precarious race
It’s ours to face now
Won't somebody please come up with something
'Cause Jesus just don't seem to be impartially working
And all of the rest are really down in the ratings
So everyone is gonna keep on waiting
Now, I know nothing lasts forever
So we might as well wish for a goddamn fix
Of this toxic changing weather
Now tell me
Won’t somebody please come up with something
'Cause Jesus just don’t seem to be impartially working
And all of the others can barely stay in the running
So everyone is still right here waiting
Won’t somebody please come up with something
Won’t somebody please come up with something
Won’t somebody please...
Won't somebody please come up with something
'Cause Jesus just don't seem to be impartially working
And all of the rest are really down in the ratings
While everyone is right here waiting
Out in the cold like a bundle of coal
Little packets of darkness wanting to glow
Well, there's nobody home and there's a wreck in the yard
And maybe they're coming back
If we wish really hard
If we wish real hard now
Won't somebody please come up with something
'Cause Jesus just don't seem to be impartially working
And all of the rest are really down in the ratings
But everyone is gonna keep on waiting
Waiting for peace at the end of our street
Back behind our apartments and in our passenger seats

Yes, this song strikes me as a song regarding people's naive belief that somehow, some way, a savior of sorts is going to show up and save us from the mess that we refuse to take responsibility for. Jesus not impartially working suggests that only certain groups of people are allowed to invoke him, even though he is assumedly available to all. So if Jesus isn't the savior of the common man, then somebody else should take his place, according to people's actions. I see shades of Obama's election in this, in that so many people heaped massive expectations on him in, hoping that a politician was going to fix all the problems which we had all allowed by sitting on our hands for years and years.

I get the feeling that the main message of the song is to step up and take responsibility for what is happening in the world today.
The whole song is full of references to hopefulness of a solution ("Maybe they're coming back if we wish really hard", "Waiting for peace (...) in our passenger seats". And of course, the reference to Jesus, who we expect to be our savior. The main line, for me, is "It's ours to face!". And that's it. Jesus isn't gonna save us. We created this shit that's happening and we've got to solve it. 09/04/2010 at 05:23

In my opinion, this song is about how common people feel. They're always waiting for someone who would do something and guide them to a better life. There's another song, "The Answer", that basically talks about the same thing.
