Bigbang, your 3rd wave of punk is more like the 4th wave of punk. id say the 3rd wave was more bands like Conflict, APPLE, Operation Ivy, and Final Conflict- Bands from 82-87

I believe bands like The Stooges or MC5 are rather labeled as proto-punk (along with The New York Dolls and Velvet Underground). That's because the term "punk" wasnt used at that time to describe those bands.
"Punk" was first used in an article in the mid-70's to describe bands like The Ramones, The Buzzcocks, The Damned, The Sex Pistols, etc, thus in my opinion these bands form the 1st wave of punk.
So, in my opinion :
1st wave = Ramones, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, The Clash, etc...
2nd wave = Black Flag, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, early Bad Religion
3rd wave = Bad Religion, Pennywise, NOFX, Rancid, even early Offspring or Green Day
4th wave = anything that came after that, may they be poppy bands like Blink-182 or Simple Plan, or hardcore bands like Rise Agaisnt and Raised Fist.
The greatest achievment of Bad Religion in punk music is that they paved the way for the 3rd wave in the late 80s and early 90s, when most of the bands from the 2nd wave broke up.

1st- Stooges, MC5 2nd- Ramones, Weirdos, Sex Pistols, Damned 3rd- Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, EARLY Bad Religion 4th- Suffer Era- BR, Operation Ivy, Cro-Mags, DRI, etc. 5th- Bad Religion (hitting popularity), Pennywise, etc. 6th- I don;t honesly believe punk has had a 6th wave....punk is whatever is challenging, new and exciting.....in my opinion that would be noise, drone, experimental stuff.....

maybe he stumbled on words. Ive spoken to greg about this and he said something I caught him saying on loveline or PI. "they are the godfathers of punk"
taking it from one era to the next.. transforming it. Not that they indeed created the concept of punk but they defined it in their own way.
Just what I got out of my convo with him. Godfathers of punk doesnt sound like fathers :P

I think the 1st wave was early 70's with bands like Iggy and the Stooges and Ramones; the 2nd wave was late 70's with bands like Sex Pistols, The Clash, Buzzcocks et al.
I could be wrong, though.

I thought the '80s was the start of the 2nd wave of punk. So when was the 1st and 2nd wave and which bands were at the forefront of respective waves?

Bad Religion is my second favorite band of all time but....invented punk? Do these guys have ANY, even a tiny, musical background? I've known since I was 16 that Bad Religion were part of the 3rd wave of punk.....and didn't become the powerhouse they are today until the 4th or 5th wave.
