Pioneer Press has got an article about the Warped Tour in their latest issue. Here's a quote from that.
"There aren't a lot of punk songs touting the merits of family life, but when anti-establishment groups like Bad Religion ply message music".
Last friday Pioneer Press mentioned Bad Religion too.
"Bad Religion: As the founder of punk label Epitaph Records, guitarist Brett Gurewitz and his band Bad Religion were the pioneers of melody-driven SoCal punk. Why you should see 'em: This is your parents' punk rock. Now you finally have something besides the upcoming school year to talk about."

"The Empire Strikes First," Bad Religion, Epitaph ***
With a Republican president in office and a war on, you'd expect Bad Religion to turn up primed for a fight.
The veteran punk band's 13th album doesn't disappoint, unleashing the kind of unbridled fury that once defined punk.
Singer Greg Graffin and guitarist-singer Brett Gurewitz wrote most of the songs, which lambaste political imperialism ("Let Them Eat War"), religious hypocrisy ("Sinister Rouge" among others) and societal bankruptcy ("Los Angeles Is Burning").
You have to hand it to a hard-core punk band that can make it through an entire album without once invoking the F-word, and even if some tracks unfold more like political manifestos than songs, Bad Religion has succeeded in expressing its outrage more eloquently while sustaining its musical muscle over the years.

I never read that one, being that I'm not on the St. Paul side of the river. That's usually the dividing line for the papers in the Twin Cities... there's an article on Warped in the Star Tribune (the paper for Minneapolis and west) that doesn't mention BR but focused more on the emergence of pop and rap into a punk show.
By the way, the Bad Religion set was easily the highlight of the day. |
