First reported about in May 2007, followed by a trailer in November 2007. Then a couple of years of nothing. Then a new trailer in May 2009. And then a whole lot of nothing. Again. But now there's finally something new to report about this documentary.
In short: One Nine Nine Four is a "documentary exploring the birth, growth and eventual tipping point of punk rock during the 90's". The bulk of the film's content will consists of band interviews and archive footage.
The film is narrated by skateboarder Tony Hawk and features interviews and footage of various bands and figures in the punk scene including Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, Dexter Holland from The Offspring, Tim Armstrong from Rancid and Fat Mike from NOFX. Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus from Blink-182 also appear in the film. And, of course, Greg Graffin and Brett Gurewitz.
Here's the new part:
Apparently, the guy who created this documentary started work on it in 2006.
"3 years later and I have completed 99% of the film, I've interviewed all of the bands, cut it together, added archival footage, Tony's narration, sound mix, colour correction you name it. However I have hit a wall with the music clearances, when we started this project we set aside 45% of our small budget for music, but the record labels and publishers(the big guys) unfortunately want more money than we can provide. This means that to release the film we need to pay the labels and publishers what they are asking as they, not the artist, control the copyrights."
The Plan
"We need to raise money from the community(meaning you) to finally finish this project, clear the music and have it released to the world. We are also trying to raise money from other areas such as sponsorship but to date this movie has been 100% independently financed out of Australia from family and friends.
We have a music supervisor now working around the clock to sort out all of the deals and paperwork with the publishers and labels, but we still need the money to pay for this music once the paperwork is signed."
So if you want to help get this documentary finished and released you can donate money. However, depending on the amount, you'll be getting something special in return:
Pledge $10 or more
Get a "Thank You" on the ONE NINE NINE FOUR website + receive an exclusive acoustic Lagwagon mp3.
Pledge $50 or more
Get a "Thank You" in the end credits of the film + a signed Limited Edition DVD of ONE NINE NINE FOUR when it's released + Limited Edition booklet about how the film was made & our experiences + All of the above.
Pledge $100 or more
Exclusive invitation to the film's premiere in Sydney or Los Angeles(whichever is closest for you) + Limited Edition ONE NINE NINE FOUR film poster + All of the above.
Pledge $1,000 or more
Receive an "Associate Producer" credit on the film(IMDB.com included) + Your choice of any 1 of the entire unedited raw interviews that we conducted (eg. Billie Joe from Green Day, Greg Graffin from Bad Religion, Fat Mike from NOFX etc) + All of the above.
Pledge $5,000 or more
Receive an "Executive Producer" credit on the film(IMDB.com included) + A Gibson Les Paul signed by Bille Joe Armstrong of Green Day + A private screening of ONE NINE NINE FOUR for you and your friends at your house prior the premiere + All of the above.
Pledge $10,000 or more
Get flown to Los Angeles(maximum $500) where I will pick you up and drive you down to Tony Hawk's offices where you will get the Tony Hawk Experience. Tony Hawk and you. Come visit the legend at his personal training facility, Tony Hawk Inc. headquarters in the San Diego area, and witness first-hand a skate session on the infamous Boom Boom HuckJam ramp. You and your guests will have a tour of the Hawk Headquarters, which is home to Tony Hawk Inc, Tony Hawk Foundation, 900 Films and Tony’s Demolition Radio show on SIRIUS satellite radio. Come have a catered lunch with Tony, shoot the breeze, and watch Tony Hawk and special guests (it could be anyone) skate a private session up close and personal. You—in Tony's world—for a day + Dinner with Myself(the director) and Fletcher Dragge from Pennywise that evening + All of the above (please note that the Tony Hawk Experience and Dinner must happen on January 7th 2010, which means this reward will be ending on Jan 1st, 2010. I will personally be in touch with the reward recipient with more details. Also the Tony Hawk Experience will be in a group of upto 20 people.)
For more details about this project, check out the kickstarter website.
The thing is: we don't know anything yet. I could be an amazing comprehensive documentary about the increasing popularity of 90's punk with proper editing.... or it could indeed be a whole bunch of 2 second clips from interviews stitched together MTV-style..
You're entitled to your opinion just as I am. I have simply taken a cynical outlook from the get-go, believing that this will be yet another poor representation of punk music and subculture, and NOT amazing. My argument (below) was not to be taken as anything but an hypothesis based on what I've seen in the past, to be confirmed or denied by my "opinion" of the film when I see it; also it was not to imply that I somehow believe my opinion may suit as "truth," or that my opinion was ever open to the possibility of this film turning good. I've pretty much already made up my mind, placing a bet on my conscience that I'll be disappointed. True, I'm guilty of a logical fallacy in that my opinion is still yet to be confirmed, but 'such is life. With that though, I'll see your other points
It's just plain stupid to judge this film before you've seen it and it's even more stupid to flip the finger at the people who were interviewed.
I agree that I got a bit carried away with the "fuck you's," ...completely uncalled for. However, I DID NOT actually write that in regards to anyone interviewed, specifically; only to those who may have had, or have, a "heightened sense of purpose over others in the punk community," also known as 'arrogance', just in case you were wondering.

could not possibly represent ALL of that to which it makes its claim
You could say that about any documentary.
Very true. I stand corrected.

Apparently it's "hip" these days on the internet to bash a movie (or a documentary in this case) after only having seen a trailer or teaser.

Me, I can't wait for this film. Of course, it could be a total clusterfuck...but let's wait and see first.

This entire documentary seems suspect, let alone this ridiculous charity drive; all of it wreaks of gratuitous complacency; yet again, another guy's selfish attempt to define an era, or moment in history in a 90 minute film, full of misleading and slighted sound bites and clips of interviews, pieced together in some fashion that could not possibly represent ALL of that to which it makes its claim; not to mention, misrepresenting the entirety of punk subculture and its decades of cultural evolution by awarding the most time and emphasis to those who are portrayed as some sort of 'punk gods', as if their status as 'media icons' renders their commentary most noteworthy. Fuck this film, and fuck anyone who wants to take it as a literal representation of history. More pointedly, fuck any of those who were interviewed for it that may have some heightened sense of purpose over others in the punk community.
The only 'punk documentary' that I will say deserves some credit is American Hardcore, and even that could not do justice to the novel, nor to the targeted time frame and era that it represented, which was under a decade.

Oh wow. The movie sounds nice, I'd probably even donate something... if I didn't have anything else to spend my money on xD I wonder if anyone will actually give them over $10 000... Bill Gates, maybe..? Anyway, I have to admit that the "special reward" does sound silly. Well, I have an issue with all "prizes" like that. However I'd do a lot to have a chance to talk with people like Mr. Graffin, Billie Joe, Dex Holland etc, I'd really feel stupid if it happened like that. I mean, "OMG, I'm so great, I'll let you eat dinner with me and you should feel special". I mean wtf?! I might be just saying that, because if I had a chance I'd probably go to a meeting I earned like that, but... it just doesn't seem right O_o.
Anyway, if anyone actually gives them over $1000, then TAKE THE INTERVIEW WITH GRAFFIN!! TAKE IT!! TAKE IT AND PUT IT ON THIS SITE FOR EVERYONE TO SEE!! xD (sorry for the Caps, couldn't resist.. -_- )

I'm a free-rider, so I'll just let someone else donate and then I'll watch it fo free on the internet when it comes out. No need to spend my money if others are willing to do it in my stead. However, if they completely removed Tim Armstrong from the film I might consider one of the smaller donations.
